I pick up USA Today expecting to read "We're Eating More Beets" but instead see a half page "Dateline: Palo Alto" on the front of the second section, with a picture of the cougar that was killed in a back yard about a mile from my house, next to an elementary school.

It wasn't reported in the news, but a week before, something spooked the horses on Coyote Hill Road, next door to where my wife and I work, and thhey all jumped the fence and were wandering in the parking lot.
