Cianna woke up at 5am today asking for mommy who has been in Chicago since Wednesday. We went to the front window of the house to look for her, then read a story. That put her to sleep again. Mommy returns home tonight.

I stopped in to the offices of One Laptop Per Child to catch up on the progress of the $100-ish Laptop. Minutes after I walked in, I got a demo of CSound running from one master laptop communicating with several other laptops around the room via WiFi. A group of kids each with a laptop open will be part of a mesh network. With CSound on each laptop, and one serving as a master, the swarm of laptops can mimic an orchestra. The new "rabbit ear" wifi antennas on the near-final orange-colored industrial design pictured here will have a range of a kilometer. For the very latest, including screenshots of user interface concepts, OLPC Wiki.

Across the street at the MIT Press Bookstore, I found Six-Legged Sex: The Erotic Lives of Bugs for $4.98 on the remainder table.

Lobster roll was lunch at MC2 restaurant at the Marriott.

After a mandatory seven-hour marketing retreat at the meeting room at the Spy Museum, I went to catch my plane at Regan's Terminal (C) at Reagan Airport. Thunderstorms over Boston and NYC delayed the flight by an hour. When I finally got a taxi at Logan, we drove past the scene of Monday's 12-ton tunnel collapse (5). By the time I got checked in at the Kendall, I missed the sponsor dinner and found my own at Legal Seafood. Before crashing, I made a rainy night image of the Media Lab.

Professor John Maeda of the MIT Media Lab came by our offices today to be interviewed by Mary O'Donnell for a future installment of our Tech Tips video series. Karla and Lynn from my team were working with our broadcast crew, and my boss Sami stopped in to observe.

John was speaking on his forthcoming book, The Laws of Simplicity, which is based on his blog.

My Flickr site will have more detailed photos tomorrow, and I'm sure I'll have shots from the trip to the Media Lab this Thursday and Friday.

It's kind of a pointless and almost criminal act to photograph an Edward Tufte book with a phone cam. But here it is hot off the presses, Tufte's latest book on information design, Beautiful Evidence. If you are serious about visual design and communication in any way, this book, and the rest of the series, is required reading.

We visited my almost 104-year-old grandmother who has been moved from a nursing home to the hospital for the last three days because she had breathing problems. She is doing much better today, recognizing us and saying a few words.
