| Haul from Wegman's Wed 06.16.04 7:30pm PDT #9488 |
![]() ![]() Wegman's wouldn't sell me a Bass Ale, only a six pack, but it took the night manager to figure out the error code. So I bought a six pacl, but then she had this big three-inch sticker that said "We ID 100%!" on her vest so she made a big production out of looking at my driver's license. Ooh -- out of state -- California. They had to go get a book and look up California. I guess they think maybe we nimber the years differently. Then the hotel didn't have a bottle opener, in the room or at the desk. Finally they found one. Now, sushi and beer, with a Hunt's tapioca pudding (chosen because it requires no refrigeration, another service the Fairfield Inn lacks). Tomorrow, de plane, de plane! |
| Lake Ontario, Irondequoit, New York Wed 06.16.04 5:51pm PDT #9487 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The road ends where Irondequoit Harbor meets Lake Ontario, at a narrow channel that permits boat access but stops cars and pedestrians. The walk on either side comes tantalizingly close -- you can wave to people you can almost but not quite shake hands with, and it looks like it might take an hour to go around the the long way. The drawbridge closes the channel come November, but nobody will be walking alongside it then. |
| Lake Ontario, Webster, New York Wed 06.16.04 5:50pm PDT #9486 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Today it was wonderful weather, probably the best week of the year, this year, any year, for Rochester, NY. After my meetings I headed to the Lake Ontario park in Webster. I took my KX1 and Pac-12 and set it up on the end of the pier. The antenna looked like an aluminum fishing pole until the last step, at which point I put on headphones and almost immediately talked to Jurek EA6UN in Balearic Is., Spain. Afterwards I took a photo for some tourists with a dog and headed up the road to see where it ended. |
| News from home Mon 06.14.04 5:24am PDT #9461 |
![]() ![]() I pick up USA Today expecting to read "We're Eating More Beets" but instead see a half page "Dateline: Palo Alto" on the front of the second section, with a picture of the cougar that was killed in a back yard about a mile from my house, next to an elementary school. It wasn't reported in the news, but a week before, something spooked the horses on Coyote Hill Road, next door to where my wife and I work, and thhey all jumped the fence and were wandering in the parking lot. |

I am sitting on a one-hour ground-stop in San Jose, declared just before we pushed back for a trip to Rochester, NY. I have my KX1, K5OOR amplifier Z100 Ultra, PAC-12, and associated batteries packed. The KX1, wire antenna, CW paddle, ainternal antenna tuner, and extra 2300mAH NiMH AA battery pack all fits in a waist pack. Theoretically rhat is all I need. If I want to go QRO, the amplifier and Z100 external tuner fit in my hand, or a shoulder pack. If I want to go somewhere with no trees, the PAC-12 vertical antenna fits in a red Radio Shack shoulder tube bag. |
