With the help of Mike, Ossama, and Jake, I have all my development tools, apps, games, data, and projects on my new Apple 15" Powerbook G4 (with Superdrive! :). I'm now using it as my primary machine, and keeping it sync'ed to my home and office machines.

I'm one very happy (and now busy) developer. :D

My Apple 15" PowerBook G4 arrived today! It has the DVD-RW/CD-RW SuperDrive, 80GB HD, 512MB ram, gigabit ethernet, 802.11g, and BlueTooth. It came pre-installed with OSX 10.3

Since I have 3Com 10/100/1000 NICs in all my boxes at home, a Cisco GigE switch, my pbook will *blaze* on my home network. When not wired in, 54Mbps around the house and office isn't too shabby.

I'm installing Office, Adobe, Toast, all my games, the JDK, and IntelliJ IDEA this afternoon... :D

Thanks to mwsmith, sorensilk, and jake for all their help! Yes, it was a motherboard short against the metal tray. I disconnected all the cables, disconnected the standoffs, put down a foam rubber layer, and remounted the motherboard.

Thanks, guys! I owe you. :D

How would you begin to fix something like this?

SYMPTOMS: 1. When upright, the computer fails to boot. The power light comes on, no video, no drive checks. 2. When on its right side (motherboard facing up), the computer fails to boot. The power light comes on, no video, no drive checks. 3. When on its left side (motherboard facing down), the computer boots fine. The power light comes on, video works, drives check, and the computer boots.

ATTEMPTED FIXES: 1. I unseated the 2 512MB DDRs and re-seated them. I unplugged all the PCI cards and AGP card, reseated them. 2. I unplugged the 2-channel IDE cables, and reconnected all the IDE drives. 3. I checked all the case fans, motherboard fan, and cpu fan. All working, no bearing failures. 4. I cleaned all the drives and motherboard with compressed air to remove dust.

ANY IDEAS? I'm at a loss. Given that it only boots when in a certain position (computer on its side, motherboard facing down), I'm lead to believe its either shorting out or there's a bearing failure in a fan, HD, CD, or DVD drives.

There's 200GB of HD, 1GB of DDR, 56X CD-RW, 4x DVD-RW, SB Audigy EAX, and a 64MB DDR ATI Radeon that I'd like to save from this if it turns out to be a motherboard problem.

Any ideas on what might cause this? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated at foremank[@]starband[.]net ...Thanks!

After so much snow and ice, it's wondrous to see the sun and blue sky again...

While I never lost my satellite internet connection despite six hours of heavy snow followed by hours of freezing drizzle, I did watch the signal strength drop from 8.2 to 6.7, and packet loss reach 30% with 1.267sec ping times.

On the signal meter, you can see the spike where the slough of snow slide off the dish. Since mounting the dish on a ground pole mount, and changing all of the cabling and connections, I've very rarely lost connection. The satellite modem, firewall/proxy server (WinXP), and ultrasparc (Solaris) and router all backed up by a 1500vac UPS.

Northern Virginia got 3 to 6 inches of snow overnight. Most county governments and schools are closed. Some businesses are on liberal leave. My wife and I still had to go to work despite the snow and poor road conditions. I "photo-blogged" my commute at "Innovations: Adventures in Hipblogging".

Unfortunately, they're now calling for sleet and freezing rain, with accumulations of up to a quarter-inch of ice. Our drives home might be far more treacherous than our morning commutes. :(

It's been snowing heavily since 8pm or so. As of 11pm, we have 4 inches on the ground and it's still coming down.

I wonder what tomorrow morning will bring?

Interesting bits of bathroom doggerel and the social commentary it may represent is explored in Stephen King's short story, "Everything You Love Will Be Carried Away", (part of the "Everything's Eventual" anthology). It's interesting the amount of culture and commentary you can find in a restroom. :)

Hello from Amphora Dinner (Herndon, VA) Vicky, her mom, and I are at Amphora Diner in Herndon, VA. Vicky's waiting for the French Toast with Eggs Over Easy, Vicky's mom is getting Pancakes with Eggs Over Easy, while I'm waiting on Eggs Benedict.

It's 17°F outside this morning, so it was bitterly cold waiting for an

empty booth in the dinner. As you can see, the diner's packed.
