| "Cult of the Mac" Thu 05.06.04 5:55pm PDT #9087 |
![]() ![]() ![]() Between the two 15" Powerbooks that were on my desk on Wednesday, and now the 12" and 15" adorning my table at home, I have a strong urge to ask the Genius Bar (aka "Apple Store tech support" to the uninitiated) folks if they want some free help. In the last couple days, I've done two rebuilds for OSX 10.3.3 (Panther), one upgrade from 10.2.2 (Jaguar) to 10.3.3 (Panther). CarbonCopyCloner as worked really well to restore apps, data, games, and permissions (Thanks, Shaun! :) I'd love to see more Macs used... |
| Part 2: One Warm Afternoon Thu 05.06.04 10:55am PDT #9083 |
...And now the conclusion to "One Cold Morning", we present to you "One Warm Afternoon"... Afternoon comes and our intrepid Jeep driver leaps into his conveyance in awe of the bright blue skies and warm breeze. Content with another's day work, he pulls out of the parking lot and onto Willard Rd in antipication of a swift drive home on Route 28 North. Alas, the line of assorted Volvos, BMWs, and SUVs ahead of him creeps ahead towards the light. He misses it. Not too be flustered by this mischance, he awaits his opportunity to enter intersection and take 28N home. Again, the creeping line of cars misses the light. Slightly flustered, he knows that the next light will be his. Finally, the light changes for a third time and our hero turns onto 28N and into bumper to bumper traffic. He stares at the tail end of a "Bimbo Box" (Dodge Astrovan) for an hour as the traffic moves inch-by-inch towards his destination... OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT'S HOLY! WHY ME?! ... An hour later, the weary-and-no-longer-intrepid Jeep driver pulls into his garage and closes the door behind him. Maybe tomorrow will be different? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then one cold morning in early May, the intrepid Jeep driver emerged from his cave to forage for that which would keep his family fed... As he journeyed for familial sustinance, he came across many wonderful sights and sounds. He shivered and delighted in the cold morning air and the sounds of the bustling world around him. The young Jeep driver felt very alive. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Roughly 500 PCs at my office were infected, but I prided myself on my "up-to-date" virus definitions and firewalls to keep my office and home PCs safe. For the past two days, I've been watching 6-120 hits an hour reported by ZoneAlarm on my home server. And this afternoon, it hit... So now I'm deworming my server at home and thinking "this wouldn't have happened on a Mac." ...I need to get a G5 next. :) |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So my 15" Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz was bought by a co-worker and my 15" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz (ATI Radeon 9700/128MB VRAM/SD/BT/1GB DDR/80GB HD) arrived today! :) I used CarbonCopyCloner to copy my apps/games/data from the old pbook to the new, and I'm a happy geek again... this is one very nice laptop. :D |

| Azaleas via Satellite... Sun 05.02.04 3:03pm PDT #9022 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Starband (Internet via 2-way satellite communications) has been working 1,000x better since we moved it from a roof mount to a pole mount. Service interruptions occur maybe once to twice a month due to very heavy winds or rains, and only last for a few seconds to a few minutes. (When I first got Starband, it was so misaligned that heavy clouds caused service interruptions, and I sometimes went a week without service. As most in #hiptop [EFnet] will tell you, this is quite an improvement for me.) Anyhoo, the azaleas and hostas are now in full bloom in our back yard. The crepe martles we planted to conceal the Dish 500 and Starband dishes are now covered in leaves. Our backyard feels lush and green again. :) |
