Spent the evening working on the CVS camcorder. I originally wanted to solder in a usb connection inside the camera in order to make plugging it in as easy as plugging a normal camera in, but have not found the female end of a mini usb connection yet. So in the meantime I thought hacking up an old printer cable in order to get the connector which I heard had the right spacing for the pins. That didn't work so hot. After the elegant approach of hammer and flat-blade screwdriver I found myself with damaged pins and not enough patience to solder around them. (See the mangled blue piece in the picture) So instead I went ghetto-geek, which always seems to work well for me. A piece of cardboard, a razor blade to make grooves to keep the wires straight, and plenty of tape. With a steady hand, I was soon downloading the first videos off my new $24.99 video camera. I haven't tweaked the quality yet, so here are the 320x240 vids straight off the camera (xvid codec required): Video 1 - Video 2

Went out to hit a few caches this afternoon because I had two travel bugs that were long overdue to get dropped back off in a cache. Found one at the local heli-pad near work, and another down in Schaumburg. After the second, I was covered in those little seeds that love to stick to your clothes. Spent 20 minutes sitting on a log pulling them off before crossing the stream on the debris dam and heading back to the car.

Picked up one of the hackable CVS camcorders this afternoon. They had a bunch in stock and they were even on sale for $24.99. Will make a good video camera for those times I don't want to risk my expensive one. And it records to xvid, so no need to re-encode anything. Now I just need to find a cable and get soldering.

Many thanks to Matt Gambrell from Tornado Alley Graphics who I've "watched" design and draw through his blogging on Hiptop Nation! He hooked me up with the latest shirt, complete with one of the guys throwing a shocker in the background, and a cup from Dirty's Tavern (in Stillwater, OK) to get my drink on with. The package had been put aside as it arrived the day I left to see my grandfather, but sparked by s4x's recent post, I pulled the shirt out and wore it to work today. I never realized how hard it can be to get a picture of your own back when noone else is around. Anyways, thanks so much Matt! Looking forward to watching more designs take shape on HN.
