The roxie deli @ san jose ave and san juan. It's a tiny corner market with a deli and a Brooklyn feel, often crammed with folks in line for some great sandwiches, such as the two foot tuna melt with everything and swiss on sour dough I'm about to order.

I went to see a band last night at the Red Devil Lounge. Tried in vain to get a photo to come out and in the process lost the hiptop camera for about 45 minutes until I found it on the floor near the bar; I think I need to make a leash for it. One patron at the bar was quite excited by my Hiptop, because she "works for the VC who invested in Danger," and hadn't actually seen Joe Q. Public with one yet.

cacophony goes to the opera

A member of the san francisco cacophony society works for the SF Opera and got us about 30 tickets to tonights surreal production of Hansel and Gretel. But being a cacophony event, we dressed up for the occasion. There were witches, and a couple of people in lederhosen, two demon chefs carrying around cooking pots containing baby dolls and rubber rats. I went as a cow, because, well, I have a cow outfit. And cows like opera too. I -really- would have liked to share photos of the caco crew admist the bemused opera normals but even in the lobby there wasn't enough light for this darn toy camera. So here's a pic of the ceiling of the opera house and some photos from room before i left. (The opera was cool, except for the singing).

Some pics of the Okapi, only relative of the giraffe, first discovered by western scientists in 1901.

Mike, thanks for clearing up the ownership legalese. I'm still sticking with the Nation in any case.

May, I tend to only see the crack of dawn from the been-up-all-night angle, but perhaps there could be an excursion for both camps. Sort of like that 80s movie Ladyhawke where Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfieffer could only share moments at sunset and sunrise...

p.s. Soren, congratulations. The subject and lead-in had me worried for a bit though.

Faded into consciousness at 10:00 this morning, blinked defensively and groaned. What's with all this light? Rolled over to the computer to check email and look at photos from someone who inexplicably was up nearly 5 hours ago. Would have said aloud "what a nut" if it weren't for that cotton-mouth. Time to crawl back into bed...

Some more photos of the protest and also a shot of Lisa Rein documenting the scene. Yes, I'm wearing a godzilla outfit. "Monsters against Monsters" -- Dav via Hiptop

The current INS detainment of hundreds of people smells a lot like the beginnings of Japanese-American treatment during WWII. Here's some scenes from a protest at the San Francisco INS office. (Hopefully I've stopped screwing up the links) -- Dav via Hiptop

clandestine night ops
A follow-up to mlee's post below... I've been thinking of trying another tactic to illuminate my hiptop photos: infrared lighting. I've heard that all charge coupled devices (CCDs, which pretty much means any digital camera) can pick up infrared light. So I've been thinking of soldering together an infrared LED array to provide low light support. The advantage is that since infrared isn't visible to the human eye it is less intrusive and preserves the clandestine nature of the sidekick. If I ever get the time to try it out, I'll be sure to make a report here.

Grabbing a bite at the deliciously downscale Tu Lan Restaurant at 6th and Market in SF, my favorite dive-vietnamese-joint in the americas. If I had one of those experience recorders from that movie Strange Days I'd record a meal here: a cacophony of sound, flavor, and aroma with blasts of flame from the stove illuminating the chaos. -- Dav via Danger Hiptop
