In other breaking news...
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayI just found out that I'll be going to Boston for some training later this month. I'll be there the afternoon of the 28th through the afternoon of May 1st, but I'll specifically have the whole afternoon and evening of the 28th to myself as my boss isn't flying in til the next morning. What does this all mean? I have never been to Boston, I have no family there, nor do I know anyone who has lived there. I'm a pretty adventurous traveller, so I'll probably make do on my own just fine, but if anyone reading this has any favorite off-the-beaten path haunts or quirky favorites that I'd never hear about normally, please let me know! Alternately, if there are any city dwellers in the area who have the inclination, I'd be happy to meet up for a beer or a good meal. I'll be starting out from the Doubletree Suites near Boston U, but if there's public transport or a reasonable cab ride, I might end up anywhere. This should be fun!

College
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayI'd say, talk to the admissions folks and spend a weekend at each one.

If you're not entering a technical field, college is as much about social learning and building networks of contacts within your field as it is about learning classwork. Its about learning to meet deadlines under extreme pressure and with minimal oversight compared to high school. Its also about learning to work in small informal groups to get things done. But in the end, it has to be somewhere you feel comfortable and at home. Outside some hypercompetitive fields and academia, once you have 5 or 6 years of experience under your belt, where you went to school becomes mostly irrelevant for job-getting purposes.

Ow!
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayI had something in mu eye earlier today and now it's BRIGHT RED. Ouch.
On an unrelated note, my county has an ice storm warning for tonight. Dammit, it's April already. I was tired of winter by Christmas.
And yet another related note, my girlfriend and I just booked our first overseas trip. We're headed to Ireland for a 6 night B&B self-drive tour. The war thing doesn't bother either of us and we're looking forward to getting away for awhile. If anyone has any must-see places there, let me know.

Zelda!

Protecting the country?
I have mixed feelings about the war, but suffice it to say that I think it's a very bad idea in these particular circumstances. I just find it hard to believe *anyone* considers this action to be protecting us. I know I feel less and less safe as war becomes more inevitable. And it's not just me. My parents for a long time have been planning to take the whole family to Europe in June for a week long vacation, but those plans are now entirely contingent on whether we attack Iraq or not. If soldiers go in, we're staying home. And I have other friends who are cutting back or canceling vacation plans this summer as war draws nearer. None of us would be considered liberals or activists or even particularly political as a general rule, so what does that say about the idea that this war is supposed to be protecting us?

Not a whole lot, I think.

A few pictures from our hunt on the Michigan State campus. For those who don't know geocaching, its a great tech based outdoor treasure hunt. Great with the Sidekick too, cause you can pull up maps and the geocaching websites on the spot!

Tears of the Sun
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayThis has been driving me nuts. Does anyone out there know the name of the song they play over the TV trailer for Tears of the Sun? The movie looks like pretty opportunistic crapola, but the song sounds slightly familiar only I can't quite place it. Any leads much appreciated.
