These pictures are being beamed to you live via satellite (okay cell tower) from La Zona Rosa in Austin, Texas.

I am here by myself tonight (as all of my friends are cheapskates and don't like paying actual money to go to concerts). Steve Earle will be coming on around ten (CST). I just found out about the concert this evening, and I decided I had to go even if no one went with me.

So here's some background on the player and the place (for those who care):

Steve Earle would be categorized by most as country folk rock. If you don't know the name, the song he is probably most commonly known for is Copperhead Road (Google the song name for some great readings into what that song is really about). He has also made headlines in the past year for his new album, Jerusalem. The album includes a track titled 'John Walker's Blues', a song in the first person about John Walker Lindh (aka The American Taliban). The american public (aka Jerry Falwell) was pretty upset about the song, due to the fact that it doesn't make JWL look like such an evil man. I highly reccomend listening to the album, and researching the news stories on the song for more information.

La Zona Rosa is probably one of the best places to see music in Austin right now. Acts I have seen here include (but are not limited to) Spyro Gyra, David Byrne, and D12 (Eminem's cohorts from Detroit).

And for those who are inclined towards the tech side (read lighting and sound), the setup is as follows:

- Lighting - Status Cue lighting console (the first moving light console I ever learned) Intellabeams Technobeams Cyberlights

- Sound - Soundcraft Series Four mixing console Universal Audio preamps Yamaha SPX990 reverbs Drawmer compressor/limiters Tascam tape/CD dbx 1/3 octave equalizer

this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayOh Thank the Lord!!!

I finally got my new sidekick from t-mobile.

So mine breaks. I call them on December 26. They say my new one will arrive in 7 business days. I got it yesterday. For those of us who can COUNT, that is not 7 business days!

Anyhow, I am now back amongst the living.

Well...ok...they're actually christmas lights. But Kwanzaa bushes/shrubberies sound more interesting.

Putting up christmas lights for my mom. I actually got a reprieve today, and the weather has been beautiful.

Got to sit on the roof and watch a Texas sunset. Not too shabby. I am not a Texas native, and therefore do not have the desire to prove that everything in Texas is the best thing on earth. The barbecue is pretty darn good. The sunsets are great...But not the best. I would have to say that the best sunsets I have ever seen are on smoggy afternoons in Los Angeles, while looking over the ocean. I am still looking forward to seeing sunsets in Hawaii and Alaska.

Happy Holidays!

Smart Mobs fly the friendly skies
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayI'm on a puddlejumper flight to Dallas this morning. While catching up on my Wired reading for the past couple of months, I noticed that Jargon Watch included 'Smart Mob' as an item in October's issue:

"Coined by cyberpundit Howard Rheingold to describe mass social movements coordinated through wireless communication."

Keep on (Smart) Mobbing in the free world!

Doing my part to contribute to the greenhouse effect. My '99 Jeep Cherokee goes through the 87 octane like Wendy's goes through mayonnaise. (That's a lot in case you were wondering)

I love May's idea about random people posts. I am planning on turning it into my crusade. But I might make it more random. I'll probably ask some pretty strange questions. It might be really cool if Mike could put a question of the day at the top of the page...kind of like the good old days of hiptop.bedope.com with daily themes.

Well, time to go back to work.

I don't know what order these will show up in, but you should be able to get the gist.

This is the GIANT Christmas tree at Zilker Park in Austin. It's actually not a tree at all. The 'tree' is made up of about thirty strings of colored lights strung from the top of a large light tower, known to Austinites as a 'moon tower'. At the top of the tower, two identical stars rest at the apex of the tree. These stars are approximately seventy feet in the air. The strings of lights then stretch out to the tops of telephone poles arranged in a circle around the center tower. The lights are arranged so that a curved pattern appears as you walk around the tree.

But the best part is standing underneath the tre, looking up, and spinning.

The first of these pictures are taken from a distance. The next couple are taken while spinning under the tree. The last one is what it would look like if you fell over because you were ridiculously dizzy from spinning under a giant christmas tree while watching your hiptop screen trying to get just the right pic.

Happy Holidays!

Just received my new hiptop case, and it is sweet. Midnight Black with Halloween Hiptop Hunt Orange trim.

I hope everyone had a great Turkey Day, and that all of your friends and family members are receiving Hiptops for Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Yakxmas/Frito Day or anything else you can think of.

Case Sensitive?
Interesting.

I have missed a lot of posting lately, so this may have been brought up previously...

It appears that hiptop nation is now case sensitive in the subject line. I sent a post, and as usual my subject line read 'Hn:insertyourfavoritephrasehere' because my hiptop automatically capitalized the first character. But my post never appeared. When I resent it with a lower case 'hn:', everything worked fine.

Either that or I am smoking way too much crack cocaine.

Always a possibility.
