| 12v PS on the cheap Sat 08.26.06 1:21pm PDT #19108 |
![]() ![]() I'm getting a new charger for my R/C car and this one needs a 12v supply that is pretty hefty -- 15A at 12v. Most PS on the market that can supply that are terribly expensive, heavy and big. I remembered reading an article once on how to rig a computer PS to function as a 12v source. Well, found a beast on sale at Fry's, this one does 20A at 12v, plenty for my needs. Original price: $49 Sale price: $25 Rebate: $25 Net cost: $0 (!) Ok, yeah, I gotta pay the tax. Buying a hobby type supply could have set me back $90 or more. Now for about $6 of parts to do the conversion, I'm all set! Sleebus |

![]() ![]() The battery in Shelly's Jetta died the other day, so I decided on getting an Optima red top to relace it. We've already had 2 VW batteries in it in 4 years, so we definitely didn't want OEM. The requirements for starting the Diesel are kinda high, so really the only aftermarket option is Optima. The new tech in this battery makes it about a 1/3rd smaller, and significantly lighter. It also withstands vibration 15x more than a standard battery, and is supposed to last up to twice as long as a standard battery. It's completely sealed, and can even be installed upside down or on it's side without leaking. Very handy if you happen to flip the car. Sleebus |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Got my PID process temperature controller for my espresso machine. The idea here is to control the breing water temp very closely. So with help from my dad (thanks dad, you are awesome! :) ) and some collective head scratching we got everything mounted up really nice. The pictures of the controller displaying "tune" means it's learning how the boiler responds to power input. That way it maintains the setpoint without overshoot. Bottom line: better espresso!
