Convention Exhibition Day 1
this picture is owned by the submitter. contact submitter for permission before using it in any wayToday's time helping out as the liaison to the 35 people participating from the MIT Media Lab was gratifying but tiring. I stood on my feet for six hours supporting and enjoying presentations on digital music composition, internet radio, neuroengineering, civic journalism and sociable robots. Tomorrow will be the same, but hopefully with much less technical glitches.

Here are the last two misfiled moblog posts: One, Two

And a new photo set on Flickr.

Denise, Laura, Kathy and I arrived at the Westin Waterfront last night right at dinner time. We all went our separate ways to check in, but some of us met up with old work buddy Liz K at the hotel bar for a couple hours of sharing stories. The Long Island Iced Tea I had really packed a punch so I stopped at that. This morning, I collected the last batches of e-mailed MIT staff and student names, registered myself and got close to 30 MIT people pre-registered in the system at the convention center for later badge pickup. Both the Westin and the adjacent convention center are only a couple years old. The interiors still have a newness about them. It was also a pleasant surprise that the convention center is the first in the country to offer free WiFi throughout delivered from something like 108 access points. Lunch was with Rachel at the Seaport Bar & Grille by the waterfront.

Here are miscellaneous photos from last week: The first two are of Cianna charming the waiter last weekend at the Macaroni Grill in Silver Spring. The guy showed Cianna how to close out our check on the touch screen. Next pic is of Sunday's dinnertime visit with grandma, who will be 104-years-old later this month. She has a hard time swallowing now, so all of her food is pureed and liquids have added thickeners. The water is mine. Monday, I worked from home to shadow an electrician who converted a bunch of our outlets to three prong and added some new ones. Tuesday, I dropped Cianna off at her grandma's house. Wednesday night, I did a fun military-themed glamour shoot with Payton in my backyard. Friday night, I released my last mid-year performance review into the company workflow and celebrated with Sparks. Yesterday I did my first shoot at Sly Horse Studios, a rental photo studio in Rockville. Nikki V styled her friend Maura who modeled. Last two pics are of Cianna playing in a tent in our backyard, and today's visit to the ice cream parlour in the back of Hometown Girl in Baltimore.

A bedtime ritual exclusive to daddy is playing the Nintendo DS interactive experience called Electroplankton. Cianna likes poking at the touch screen to make the various animated plankton jump in different ways while shaping the electronic music. She quickly gets drowsy, and that's worth more than the price of the game.

After the presentations this morning and the board meeting, I sat with students and grad students in the Robotic Life Group and the Physical Language Workshop to hear project updates. Some photos will gradually appear on Flickr between now and the weekend.

At 3:30, Professor Maeda lead a group of students and sponsors on a walk down Newbury Street on our way to a tapas dinner at Tapeo.

I stopped in the T-mobile store to pick up the new Sidekick 3 leather holster. It fits loosely like it's supposed to accomodate the slightly larger Sidekick 2. I like the new magnetic clasp.

And I couldn't miss all the displays in the Niketown store for the Nike+iPod system just released today. I bought the black Air Moire shoe and wireless kit to try out.

At the restaurant, we were passing around this week's Boston Dig paper which features an article on the OpenStudio project. I love the headline above the paper's masthead.

My day started out with a seven-hour marketing retreat where our group invited to join. The idea was to build cooperation and understanding. As I walked in, I said hello a new hire who walked by me. I introduced myself as being on the web team. The person said, "you look like a web person." I cheerfully said, "thanks!" But really wanted to say, "you almost look like a marketing person." Despite the greeting, the exercises were fun, and the various teams did some hilarious skits to introduce themselves and their roles.
